Buzzzz ... It is Mosquito Season! What is the best repellent that doesn't feel toxic to your body?

Avon's Bug Guard and SSS Bath Oil, why is it better? What is the difference?

With warm weather comes activities like camping, hiking, backyard yoga, lounging by the pool and taking a walk around the block, among many other things. Don’t let the outdoors ‘bug’ you—protect yourself with Bug Guard, repellents that help shield skin from insects from dawn til dusk. Check out our full collection of DEET-free bug repellents and take the bite and burn out of summer.

What is DEET?

Deet (known to chemists as N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) is a yellowish liquid that, when applied to skin or clothing, repels a number of biting insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. But is it harmful? It was this question that first triggered widespread deet-aversion among consumers. Between the early 1980s and late 1990s, 14 cases of potentially deet-related encephalopathy (brain damage) were reported in the medical literature, all but one of them in children who were 8 or younger. Three of those children died; the remaining 11 recovered fully.

The reports triggered a wave of fear among consumers that has yet to fully abate. But the link between the chemical and sickness was never conclusively proved, in part because not nearly enough information was reported for epidemiologists to discern between deet exposure and other potential causes (such as infections) in those cases. With these things in mind, we tend to want to lean towards products that do not contain deet. Better safe than sorry. Not only that but products with Deet in them really stink!

What about Picaridin?

Picaridin repels insects, ticks and chiggers. It is a synthetic compound first made in the 1980s. It was made to resemble the natural compound piperine, which is found in the group of plants that are used to produce black pepper. Picaridin has been widely used as an insect repellent in Europe and Australia, but has only been available in the United States since 2005. I like that it was at least formulated to resemble something natural!

What is IR3535?

IR3535 is just a synthetic amino acid which messes with an insect's sense of smell. It is structurally similar to the natural substanceβ-alanine- a beta amino acid which is, among other things, a component of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). It has been used in Europe for over 30 years, where it has established an excellent safety record.

So with this in mind Avon uses Picaridin in and IR3535 as their main ingredients in their products.

What about SSS Bath oil?

Avon doesn't make any claims about whether it's Original SSS Bath Oil works as a bug repellent.

Read the reviews of Avon's customers about this bath oil. Something about the delightful fragrance does not appeal to mosquitos. Use it in a bath or a spray bottle for the shower.

I have had several customers who would buy several bottles at a time so they could spray it on their horses to help repel flies. Here is the recipe that I found on the web.
